When History Spoke: 1971 Newspaper Cutting Reveals America’s Real Face (Social Media)

National News: America's double standards have once again come under scrutiny. While the United States continues to threaten India with trade tariffs, it maintains a soft corner for Pakistan—a pattern that dates back decades. The Eastern Command of the Indian Army has recently brought this reality to light by sharing a historic newspaper clipping from August 5, 1971, on X (formerly Twitter), exposing long-standing US anti-India policies.

As per the archival report, between 1954 and 1971, the United States supplied over $2 billion worth of military aid to Pakistan—equivalent to nearly ₹1 lakh crore today. These very weapons were used by Pakistan in the 1965 and 1971 wars against India.

Army Shares Historical Evidence

The newspaper clipping, shared by the Indian Army, is a powerful reminder of how both the United States and China supported Pakistan militarily during a critical time in South Asian history. The document includes a statement from the then Minister of State for Defence, V.C. Shukla, who informed the Rajya Sabha that NATO and the Soviet Union were being approached to supply arms to Pakistan amid the Bangladesh liberation movement.

Accompanying the post, the Army wrote, "Preparations for war were underway on this very day—5 August 1971." This statement reinforces the fact that August 5 holds historical significance, reminding Indians of how major global powers were strategically undermining India behind the scenes.

U.S. Support for Pakistan: A Pattern Repeated

The report clearly outlines how the U.S. and China jointly armed Pakistan with advanced weaponry, which was later used against India. Despite these actions, the United States never imposed tariffs or economic restrictions on Pakistan. On the contrary, Pakistan continues to receive trade benefits from the U.S.

In fact, under the Trump administration, the tariff on Pakistani imports was reduced from 29% to 19%, highlighting a continued bias in U.S. foreign policy—a far cry from its professed neutrality.

Threats to India, Yet Trading With Russia Themselves

Recently, the Trump administration issued a warning to India, stating that if it continued purchasing oil from Russia, it could face tariffs exceeding 25%.

India, however, responded strongly, asserting, “Purchasing oil from Russia is an independent and strategic decision. When we began these imports, the U.S. itself endorsed the move. Now, the same U.S. is threatening us while Western countries continue trading with Russia on a much larger scale.”

India's Ministry of External Affairs made it clear that the nation will not compromise its energy security or sovereignty due to any form of external pressure.

India of Today Knows How to Respond

This 1971 newspaper cutting is more than just an old headline—it is documentary evidence of decades-long geopolitical manipulation. As America once again attempts to leverage economic tools against India, it is crucial to recall how history has repeated itself.

The India of today is not the India of 1971. Modern India stands equipped to not only uncover historical truths but also to respond with strength and clarity—both diplomatically and strategically—safeguarding its interests on the global stage.
